Peter Deneen celebrated 40 years of pottery and his 30th Professional Association of Innkeepers International Conference and Trade Show. The Deneen family work out of St Paul, Minnesota, and provide us with our much sought-after and highly collectible Carlisle House mugs. To celebrate the anniversaries, Peter was asked by PAII CEO Jay Karen to cut the ribbon to open the show!

Elevator life!

From the elevator we can see the big world outside of our conference! The Arkansas River before we go into the conference and then again when we come out! We know there is more to see in Little Rock but we have been totally dedicated to our profession as innkeepers. Until, that is, the sun goes down! And then we change and become the social animals intent on having a good time with our peers!

Last night was a great example. We spent a happy evening with great food and good (and generous!) drinks at the Clinton Presidential Library. Unpolitically they had a remarkable exhibit called "Nathan Sawaya: Art of the Brick" with exhibits such as this one which is completely built with LEGO!!!

Politically it was interesting to step back 20 years and to compare then with now.

Julius J. Lankes and the Art of the American Woodcut

Free Exhibit at Dickinson College

Julius J. Lankes is considered to be one of the country's leading woodcut artists of the first half of the 20th century. He emphasized handcrafted prints and was part of a printmaking revival in England and the U.S. that started during the second half of the 19th century. The revival was part of the broader Arts and Crafts Movement and represented a conscious rejection of the mechanization of the Industrial Revolution. Lankes died in 1960.

The exhibit can be seen 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday- Saturday at the college's The Trout Gallery, Weiss Center for the Arts through Feb. 18.

"Murder and Mayhem" - at breakfast?

"He killed my Uncle John."

In 2010 local historian and Sentinel reporter Joe Cress wrote a book Murder and Mayhem in Cumberland County relating tales of the dark side of this county's history. On the cover, a man in handcuffs is being led away by the sheriff after he had murdered a Carlisle lawyer, and shot three others in August of 1955 in the courtroom of the Old Cumberland County Courthouse on the next block of our street.

Before his departure this morning, one of our young guests glanced into our gift case and suddenly pointed at the book saying "That was my great-grandfather." Already sensing his response, Mary asked who, and Aaron said "Percy Haines!", to which Mary said quietly "He killed my Uncle John".

Needless to say the departure was delayed and it was a matter of moments before Aaron and Mary were poring over old clippings from the Sentinel and other newspapers, as Mary told Aaron of the happenings that sad day in 1955. And Aaron responded with his family's views about Percy Haines.

Breakfast here at the Carlisle House is always interesting, and never more so than when the guest coincidences are as close to home as this one!

Innkeepers said thank you to those who’ve served our country by giving veterans a special Veterans Day wake up on 11-11-11. Hundreds of Inns and B&Bs throughout North America opened their doors yesterday, November 10, 2011 to active and retired military by offering a free room to those who’ve served.

The Carlisle House celebrated with 4 rooms and 6 active duty and veteran guests…two couples were both active and/or former military members. As Mary is a former Army Nurse, the breakfast conversation was lively and hugs plentiful! These photos capture the special guests.

One vet, whose wife (a Vietnam era Army nurse) could not be with us, told of his 3 daughters...all Army nurses as well. He gave us a 2004 article in the local paper about the four amazing women in his life! Another regular visitor with family in the area announced that she was ALSO a veteran so we had 8 in the dining room.

Carlisle, although you may not know this, is the Center of the Universe! Sooner or later, people we admire from all walks of life find their way here, and to our great pleasure most often stay at the Carlisle House.

Tonight we feel particularly honored because one of our most favorite authors is staying with us. David Baldacci is here in town, and is the keynote speaker in tomorrow's "Celebrate the Book" Central Pennsylvania Book Festival.

David's books have been a great source of pleasure from his first, "Absolute Power", through the King and Maxwell series, and Alan's particular favorites, the Camel Club series, to his latest book "One Summer" - a very different sort of novel from the preceding ones.

A prodigious writer, David still finds time in his life to contribute to literacy efforts across the country. These include the Wish You Well Foundation founded by David and Michelle to support family literacy in the United States, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, and the Virginia Literacy Foundation.

He is also involved in support for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Cure Search, this last supporting lab research and state-of-the-art care of infants, children, teens, and young adults with cancer.

If, like me, you are curious about the genesis of a writer, then read "An Overnight Success" by David. You will enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed having him stay with us. For us, "The Whole Truth" is that David's writing is "Simple Genius", and "The Simple Truth" is that he is "The Winner", and David - we "Wish You Well"!

Holocaust Survivor and Autobiographer

We were delighted to host a special guest last night. Severin Fayerman and his dear friend Toni. Severin was in the area to give one of his many inspirational presentations to young school students about his life in Poland and survival in the horrid and notorious prison camps of Nazi Germany, one of which was Auschwitz.

His book, A Survivors Story, details his life and the horrors experienced. Following the war and reunited with his family, young Severin's family came to the states, bought the small Baldwin Tool and Die Company in NJ and developed it into the prestigious Baldwin Brass Company!

History is personal and all around us

Those of you who have stayed in our Ewing Room or Rose Room, and certainly those of you who have the pleasure of being a Carlisle local, or Carlislian, will know that our B&B used to be the home of the Ewings, and that the twins, Seymour and Bill, grew up in our house.

We are reminded of this, and of them, often during the renovations and maintenance we are constantly performing, and yesterday as we were stripping old wallpaper we came across yet another Ewing Signature on the wall. Now, Seymour has been the most prolific writer, with comments on walls all over the property, but this one is by Bill, or William as he clearly liked to be called in his younger days. I said that Seymour did most of the writing but Bill made up for it with this one - it is almost 3 feet across!

For the first 5 years that we owned the Carlisle House, we often used to see Seymour and Bill drive into our parking lot and circle slowly around looking to see what changes we had made, and of course they were always available for open houses when Seymour would quietly sit in a chair in the Rose Room until he was noticed, then he'd say in a loud voice "It's alright! You can come in, I'm not stuffed!".

The next story about Bill and Seymour needs a little explanation. Our B&B was built in 1826 and has thick rock walls in the basement with enormous floor joists sitting on top of them, with the brick walls outside the joists, and on upward. Imagine, if you will, that between each joist is an open-fronted box with the rock as the bottom, two joists forming the walls, brick at the back, and the floor above is the top. Keep that in mind!

In the basement are the electrical breaker boxes, and we always keep a clear path between the basement steps and the electrical boxes so that we can reset breakers when needed. As we do a lot of maintenance, the path is used often and one day Mary went to the breaker box - maybe an hour or two after I had last been there - and in the middle of the path were scattered what looked at a quick glance like dollar bills. Mary picked them up, and noticed that on the back were typed Seymour and Bill's names. She called me and we stood there mystified as to where they could possibly have come from. As we looked around we shone a flashlight into the "box" described above, and saw an old leather wallet stuffed with play money!

The problem is that the opening of the wallet was facing into the box, toward the bricks. We still don't know how the money got out of the wallet and about 4 feet to the path to the breakers! Maybe it is the twins' way of saying "Don't forget us! We're still going to be here for as long as people remember us!".

We miss the twins, but are so glad to have known them. They truly were a part of Carlisle's history.

Kayak Long Pine Run Reservoir - Kings Gap, near Carlisle PA

Novice as well as experienced paddlers are welcome to participate in a relaxed 1.5 hour exploration of this quiet reservoir located in Michaux State Forest near Caledonia State Park.

This peaceful, 155 acre lake has approximately three miles of shoreline, most of which is mixed hardwood and pine forest. While small electric motor boats are permitted, canoes and kayaks are more typical. Fishing and hiking are also available at Long Pine Run Reservoir.

Kayak program participants meet Kings Gap staff at the lake. Single kayaks, paddles and life vests are provided. Basic instruction and safety procedures will be reviewed before launching.

Please be aware of these safety restrictions when registering:

Participants must be 12 years or older, and able to swim.

Each participant age 12-18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

300 lb. weight limit for kayaks.

Kings Gap Staff will provide a natural history program during each session.

The Association was founded in the late 1960s by Norman Simpson, the "father of country inn travel in America." In his pioneering book, Country Inns and Back Roads, there were 12 properties listed, primarily in the New England region. Today, Select Registry represents approximately 400 of the finest country inns, B&Bs and unique small hotels from California to Nova Scotia - the very best the travel industry has to offer.

Perhaps the most important distinction between a Select Registry member inn and any other is their system of quality assurance. Select Registry carries out a regular quality assurance inspection of each of its nearly 400 inns. This program involves independent inspectors - not employees of Select Registry - with years of experience in the hospitality industry. The inspectors arrive anonymously, spend the night, and evaluate the inn based on a detailed ten-page point system, which translates into a pass/fail grade for the inn. Inns applying for membership are inspected periodically as are existing member inns.

For many young people, today is the start of the 5-week intensive, known to the cognoscenti as "Ballet Boot Camp"!.

Yes, the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet has started the first of its two summer programs, with aspiring ballet dancers from all over the world descending on Carlisle to receive the best schooling possible. Founding Artistic Director Marcia Dale Weary, Associate Artistic Director Darla Hoover, and CPYB's Resident Choreographer Alan Hineline lead an amazingly talented staff whose mission is "to inspire, educate and enrich the lives of our students and the region through training in and the performance of classical ballet.". We are proud to be one of Carlisle's CPYB supporters!

On Saturday July 2, the Stars of CPYB 2011 performance takes place at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, Harrisburg, PA. Warrior Ride comes to Central PA

for an amount up to and including their life."

Warrior Ride will be hosting a wounded veteran ride through Central Pennsylvania June 15^th - 18^th. The Warrior Ride is a non-profit organization that equips wounded veterans with adaptive bicycles for event rides throughout the country.

Warrior Ride will start their event at Fairfield Inn & Suites in Carlisle, PA on June 15^th 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for their initial registration and bicycle fitting. The public is welcome to attend to meet and greet the veterans participating. Market Cross Pub & Rillo's will be cooking food for participants and selling food for donations to the cause.

The ride will start on June 16^th at 9:00 am at the Boiling Springs Children's Lake in Boiling Springs, PA and move on to the State Capitol. On June 17^th at 9:00 a.m. the event will start at the Army Heritage Education Center and Carlisle Barracks and move on to City Island. Their last day will be on June 18^that 9:00 a.m. from Fairfield Inn & Suites Carlisle to King's Gap and back.

One, Six, and Ten....

No, for all those expatriate Brits like me, that does NOT mean One Pound, Six Shillings and Tenpence! (Everybody younger than 50 is now scratching their head saying "Shilling? Tenpence?).

No we are talking about the new Jessie's Room Experience. Consider, you wake up in the morning after a restful sleep in a great bed with awesome sheets, and the first thing you are faced with is a decision.

Do I (you ask yourself) need a quick shower? Can I take a little longer and enjoy the six body jets? Or can I descend into complete enjoyment with the shower AND the body jets AND then sit down in front of the ten pulsating massaging back jets?

Clearly a decision like this should not be made in a hurry, so here is our suggestion. Throw on some clothes (we really would prefer you do that!), then come down to the dining room and enjoy our awesome breakfast, and then you can go back to Jessie's Room and take all the time you need to enjoy your shower.

We would not go so far as to say that you should make a special trip to Carlisle to enjoy Jessie's new shower, but it wouldn't surprise us if you did!

By the way, our policies do state that we are not responsible for domestic disputes caused by one partner spending too long in the shower!

This year’s bee marks Ye’s second appearance on the national spelling stage. She tied for fifth place in the 2010 competition. She is an 8th grader at Lamberton Middle School here in Carlisle.

In May 2010 a huge hailstorm hit Carlisle, leaving us with over $40,000 in insurance claims, and for a few minutes last night we thought we were in for more of the same!

Then we heard on ABC27 that we were under a tornado warning, so we moved to the middle of the building and waited as the storm passed over. We have NEVER before seen so much flooding in our parking area but fortunately it has gone by this morning!

Right now the sun is shining and it's as though last night's storm never happened. Really, life is pretty darn good in Carlisle, PA!!

Next weekend it is the Carlisle Ford Nationals show, and on Saturday evening June 4 there will be the First Annual Ford Parade of the finest 400 Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles in a big street party in downtown Carlisle, right outside our doors. We still have just one room left for Saturday night, and as luck would have it it is the one with our latest new bathroom with the body jets, so why not come and enjoy the luxury of staying with us at the same time as you help us make history!

So far, Rose has gotten a shiny new bathroom with a soaking tub, jetted shower, and double vanity, and Molly is getting a bigger bathroom with a 5-foot shower with an Aquatower, and a new vanity and sink.

Not to be outdone, Jessie demanded a new shower also. But being the little minx that she is, her shower had to be special, so it has 10 pulsating back-jets, 6 body jets and the regular shower as well!

I think it is so pretty we should install it right here in the hall, but Mary said that wasn't a good idea. What do you think?

Yes folks, the Lonely Loo is lonely no more!

With a new vvaanniittyy (yes, it is a DOUBLE vanity!) and a soaking tub with an Aquatower shower unit, LL has taken on a new lease of life and is now proud to be a part of our most spectacular bathroom to date! Lonely is specially fond of the new body jets which he is certain his close friend Helen will want to experience. (Close? Well, we won't go into that here....).

Lonely and Rose are looking forward to making lots of new friends over the next few years, but little do they know that just above them, Molly has been plotting to go one better than Rose! Watch this space for more news, but just to keep you interested...

YES! IT'S LONELY LOO TOO! er, I mean TWO!!! Is it a coincidence that LL2 is almost directly over LL? Well, yes, but keep watching anyway as the plot thickens!

Carlisle Road Diet Here!!

Carlisle goes on a diet...a Road Diet! Yippee!

A “road diet” involves reducing the number of lanes in a road. In the case of Carlisle, it involves reducing High and Hanover Streets from 4 lanes to 3. Instead of two travel lanes in each direction, under a road diet we will have one travel lane in each direction, plus a dedicated lane in the center for left turns. The main reasons road diets are implemented are to “calm” traffic by reducing speeds, and to increase safety for motorists as well as other forms of transportation (walking, bicycling).

The line eraser trucks came yesterday to remove old and paint new lines. We now have the 3 lanes and the new digital video signal controls will be activated soon. Other segments of the traffic calming and people friendly plan include better and shorter crosswalks, bicycle lanes and signage on the interstates directing trucks around town! We can hear the "quiet" already and are thrilled!

The trout streams are restocked for the season, and with the Letort Spring Run (featured in "50 Places to Fly-Fish Before You Die") just half a mile from here, we are looking forward to the arrival of our regular fly-fishers. Of course we are looking forward to making new fly-fishing friends, and if you've never tried it, why not check out our fly-fishing page and find a guide to help you get started.

It's catch-and-release so we can't offer to fry up a pan of delicious rainbow or brook trout, but if you're lucky our breakfast quiche that day may be our Scandinavian, featuring Smoked Salmon, Dill, and Havarti!

The Dill family maintained a tavern in the Dillsburg area beginning in the 1750's and this final structure was begun in 1794. Great fiddle, banjo and bass music and delicious culinary offerings!

What an exciting and happy weekend we had here with Brienne and Keith! Our Carlisle House was filled with all their families and friends for their big wedding celebration in the Historic District. They dined at our favorite, Piatto, Friday after the rehearsal and were married today at the old
Carlisle Ribbon Mill.

Maybe we'll get a wedding photo tomorrow.

Tubby Kohler claims “I’ve been framed!”

Chief of Detectives Carlisle House was bubbling over with excitement today when he announced that Tubby Kohler had been placed in custody along with his shower of associates. Chief House was even more pleased just a couple of hours later when Tubby’s plea of insanity (he said he’d lost his marbles) was rejected as it turned out Tubby was actually surrounded by his marble back and walls.

Kohler is known far and wide as a smooth operator, but is so vain that he can’t resist telling all and sundry how good he looks. When Chief House heard this for a second time he arrested Kohler for Double Vanity.

Sharing the credit with the rest of the Police Faucet, the Chief said “It’ll take more than a couple of body jets to wash this case away!”. Tubby was seen to smile quietly, knowing that among all his bling there were actually THREE body jets!

It was looking really bad for Tubby until his new lady friend, Rose Room, gave him an alibi, saying “He didn’t do whatever he did, ‘cos he was with me at the time, whenever it was, and if he did of done it he would be in hot water and that can’t be ‘cos EVERYBODY knows that the Hot Water is in HIM!”.

Chief Carlisle House was left reeling by this verbal onslaught, and was left with no choice but to let Tubby go with just the simple warning “I’ll be washing you!”

Being English I often find myself pronouncing words differently from Americans. I assure them that it is actually my language, usually to hear the response that there are more Americans than English now, so that makes it THEIR language now. Be that as it may, there are one or two pronunciations that we can all agree on, so please join me in singing the following words to Gershwin's famous melody!

For those of you who have not yet been to Trattoria Piatto, there is only one drawback. It is too darn close to the Carlisle House for comfort - or to be more exact, for a comfortably svelte waistline!! The temptation to just drop in there for a quick grilled pizza, glass of red, and the above-mentioned gelati is almost too much to resist! But after a hard day's work moving clawfoot tubs and painting walls, why on earth would I want to resist such a treat?

The Lonely Loo in an earlier blog post was left alone when Clawfoot the Tub decided to go out with the Boyz and leave the bathroom for ever. The "Boyz" in this case were Michael "Six-pack" Blumenthal and Alan "Six-pack? Mine's a keg!" Duxbury.
We manhandled the old cast-iron tub down the stairs and out to the garage where it now awaits restoration and a new home. The Rose Room bathroom now has refinished walls and tomorrow morning our local flooring company will install a new floor ready for the exciting new fixtures to arrive and be installed over the next few days.

Two for one update

Don't get excited! You have to wait for January and our annual "Two Nights for the Price of One" Cabin Fever Promotion!

No, this post is to give you quick updates on Flat Frosty from the last post, and the Lonely Loo from the previous one.

Before leaving PA to fly back to Virginia (or however the US Postal Service transported him, Flat Frosty paid a visit to the Cumberland County Vietnam Veterans memorial, and was photographed to commemorate his visit. Along with Flat Frosty we send our greetings and thanks to ALL Military Veterans who have sacrificed so much for the USA and its allies. (Particularly the British, says Alan!)

Following on from the Lonely Loo Post which was inordinately well received by bathroom aficionados everywhere, we wanted to say a fond farewell to the wallpaper which for many years was admired at length by all occupants who forgot to take a book or newspaper with them. We don't know quite how long the wallpaper graced the walls of the bathroom, only that sometime before we became the owners, someone had covered it up with fabric which we removed during our upgrade process.

Maybe there is someone around who still has memories of this wallpaper, and maybe not. In 185 years, this historic home has seen its share of people coming and going, let's just hope that this wallpaper brought a smile to many faces along the way.

Thanks to our granddaughter, Ryleigh, we had a guest last week whose name was "Flat Frosty" the Snowman. Frosty visited us to see how the weather in PA was different from the weather in VA.

He chose a great week to visit and took lots of facts and memories back to Ryleigh's class! For once, we had less snow than VA, so we were able to take Frosty all over the place!

He came to a Chamber of Commerce meeting, visited the Cumberland County Vietnam Vets memorial, and in fact did all the many different activities we squeeze into our time along with running the Carlisle House.

Not to be missed was dinner at the Hamilton Restaurant where you have to already KNOW about their famous Hotchee Dogs, because they are not actually anywhere on the menu! Ryleigh's dad, Sean, has been known to drive up from Virginia to get his Hotchee fix, and we totally understand why!

Is there anything sadder than a Lonely Loo? Those of you who have stayed in our Rose Room may recognize the bathroom - or rather the "missing bath" room! Yes, I was heard to say that the winter months were quieter at the Carlisle House and wouldn't it be nice if we could do one or two small upgrades for the benefit of our wonderful guests.

Cabin Fever ends for 2011, but...

...we already took two reservations for next year! This morning was the last weekend in 2011 for our "Cabin Fever 2 nights for the price of one during January" special package, and our guests enjoyed it right to the last mouthful of our delicious gourmet breakfast!
They especially liked our Banana Carrot Cake with Orange Glaze! Yummy! Although personally I preferred the German Quiche packed full of chopped Crimini mushrooms and Cambozola cheese, finished with just the right amount of rosemary! Sweet baked goods at breakfast are not really an English thing, but I am trying my best to adapt, and Mary's baking really helps!

Destination Charleston: Low Country AND LOW temperatures!

On to the big conference....we headed to Charleston with visions of lovely weather and balmy skies....NOT! Rain and temps in the 20s and 30s but that didn't dampen our conference experience or appetites.

The Professional Association of Innkeepers International presented 4 days of intensive seminars with most interesting and useful ideas and techniques from dining rooms, food prep, reservation systems and financial strategies to the buzz word of the conference: SOCIAL MEDIA! Many of the best suggestions and tips were shared by the hundreds of other Inn members from across the continent and even from Hawaii.

PAII CEO, Jay Karen, launched the new BETTER WAY TO STAY campaign promoting B&Bs and Inns as a refreshing, exciting and memorable option to other typical lodging! Come stay at a B&B or Inn!

The daily hard work was rewarded by delicious evening dinners with Southern treats such as Seared Pork Belly, Cornmeal Fried Okra, Shrimp and Grits, Hoppin' John and Collard Greens!

The last evening, all participants and vendors celebrated at a huge reception in the courtyard of the Charleston Visitors Bureau in the Historic District. We all dined on Low Country cuisine and shagged the night away...no, not with Austin Powers. Great shag dance demos, live music and great fun.

Lots going on last week at the B&B but Mary and I managed to head south to Charleston SC for the International Innkeeping Conference. So much to learn, so much to do, so VERY much to eat! And so much snow on the way! We stayed in Huntersville NC on the way down and woke to 6 inches of the cold white stuff, and much though I like the Carolinas, somebody from PA needs to show them how to prepare for snow! More details of our continuing education over the next few days, but for now this really is a color photograph of I-77!!!

RELIVE THE MAGIC….LONG LIVE THE BEATLES!

By the fall of 1978, Long Live The Beatles growing reputation and a sold out show for 10,000 people at Six Flags Great Adventure brought the brothers to the attention of the producers of the Broadway Production Beatlemania. The producers were blown away by the brothers’ attention to detail, including right-handed guitarist Tim who had recently taught himself to play bass left-handed to accurately portray Paul McCartney. An offer was made to Brian and Tim to audition for the roles of John Lennon and Paul McCartney respectively. The brothers “passed the audition” and soon began daily rehearsals on Broadway for their debut on the “White Way”.

While Tim and Brian were still in rehearsals in 1979, Beatlemania closed on Broadway. But the brothers wasted no time and secured themselves a multi-year deal for Long Live The Beatles with Six Flags Entertainment, enlisting youngest brother Mike on the drums as “Ringo” along the way. The show was performed for an estimated three million people at the Six Flags parks from 1979-1984.

The brothers would also reach another milestone during this period becoming the first Beatles tribute band to recreate a Beatles concert at a major league baseball stadium, performing for more than 37,000 rock n' roll and baseball fans at Philadelphia’s Veterans Stadium in 1980.

Vietnam Era Gun Trucks in Carlisle PA

Truck and Military Vehicle enthusiasts had the opportunity to see one of the largest gatherings of Vietnam Gun Trucks as “The Gathering” made a Saturday only stop at the Carlisle All-Truck Nationals. Gun Trucks were modified in the field to meet combat and transportation missions. Each of these trucks has a unique character and career of service.

The Carlisle House Bed & Breakfast was honored to have two of the Vietnam veterans with us this past weekend for this event. Bob and Irwin served in the late 60's in An Khe and their unit had a wonderful reunion in Carlisle in conjunction with the show. Thanks for their service!!
